Laura Mulvey's Male Gaze Theory in Films

Trailer No.1 - Lucy

  • The actress in this film is Scarlett Johansson and is first see in her underwear on a bed, which instantly reinforces Laura Mulveys Theory.
  • She is getting beaten up; she is seen as a weak and vulnerable damsel in distress.
  • Her 'damsel in distress' look soon switches to a powerful, strong woman; roles reversed.
  • She has control on people, this breaks the stereotype of a women and challenges the Male Gaze theory.

Trailer No.2 - Before I Go To Sleep

  • The main character is a female, played by Nicole Kidman.
  • She is seen as weak and vulnerable
  • There is a shot of her from behind and she is naked, The Male Gaze theory is implied.
  • Kissing, close up emphasized.

Trailer No.3 - Lets Be Cops

  • The first girl in the trailer is a waitress, short black dress, hair down, boobs are emphasized.
  • Group of girls on the street, linking arms, dressed up to go to a party
  • Girls fighting; 'cat fight', typical girl fighting
  • Laura Mulvey's theory is evident

Trailer No.4 - Inbetweeners 2

  • First sight of girls are in bikinis on a beach and one of the characters smacks their bums, no respect for women?
  • Naked women; seen as sex objects to the boys.
  • Their car has a topless woman; continued theme of no respect for women
  • Speaking to one of the characters mother and her boobs are emphasized
  • The trailer reinforces The Male Gaze Theory because the women are seen as sexual objects and not people.

Lyric Analysis

Chosen Song

Jessie J - Sexy Lady

This song does not have a music video which I see as an advantage because there are no expectations to live up to as oposed to others. It is about feeling good about yourself and not letting anyone bring you down.

Analylis Part 2

The next three music videos were picked at random which were chosen by each person in the class.

Video No.1: Crystal Fighters - Follow (alternative electro)

Narrative of the Video: It is an abstract video but the story seems to be the a woman that follows the scarecrow into a different place which looks unusual. This reminds me of Alice in Wonderland were Alice follows the rabbit to Wonderland.

Techniques and Conventions:
  • Lip syncing
  • The editing has an effect were it looks like it stops and starts really quickly, looking like something out of a flip book
  • Costume changes keeps the video fun and interesting
  • Coloured lights on the characters surrounded by darkness
  • Establishing shot of the hop that the woman is sat in front of which shows the audience the location of the video.
  • Rhythmic editing
Video No.2: 5 Seconds of Summer - Amnesia (pop)

Narrative of the Video: The story is about looking back on the memories they all had with their ex-girlfriends and remembering all the good times they had together.

Techniques and Conventions:
  • Lip Syncing
  • Slow motion
  • Depth of field
  • Warm tint
  • Performance
  • Music matches the pace of the song
Video No.3: Rihanna - We Found Love (pop)

Narrative of the Video: It is basically a video that represents a relationship which goes from good to bad.

Techniques and Conventions:
  • Voice Over
  • Slow Motion
  • Heart shaped silhouette formed by the couple
  • Projection
  • Variety of Locations
  • Fast motion
  • Montage edit
  • Projection -  Flowers to Fire, connotes the relationship going from good to bad
  • The bedsit location reflects the 'Hopeless' relationship.

Music Video Analysis

This is my analysis of 5 music videos which was a task given in class, which I had to say what I liked and disliked about them.
Here is my all time favourite Music Videos:
I have 3 music video's which I can't decide from which one is the best so here they are.

Love Is On The Radio - Mcfly

It is my favourite music video because it always makes me smile everytime I watch it, it never fails to make me smile. I love Mcfly and they are such a fun group and that always comes across in the music videos.

Eyes Wide Shut - JLS ft Tinie Tempah

This is another favourite. I am a big fan of JLS and this is my favourite video of theirs for a number of reasons. One reason is because I think they all look so smart and slick which makes the video look clean and proffesional. I also love the special effects on the video because they look so surreal and really suit the style of the song.

Crazy In Love - Beyonce` ft Jay-Z

This is my final favourite music video. I just love how she is so natural and effortless within the video which makes everyone else want to copy her. She also created at least 4 iconic outifits in this video, but the first iconic outfit that comes to mind is the denim shorts, white tank top and red heels.

My Aims

Within this project, I would like to acheive a successul music video which looks proffesional.

I have a general idea of what I want to create; a happy, positive song. I want to use a song called 'Sexy Lady' by Jessie J which doesn't have a music video because it is a song off her album. The reason why I also like the idea of using a song with no video is so that there are no expectations to compare it to, it is something that I have created with my own ideas. Although there is no music video for this song, it is used on an advert for 'Boots', a popular store usually known for the products sold there such as make-up. Some of my inspiration for my video comes from the advert. I like how it focuses on the women without any distractions.

Here is the Boots Advert:

The Brief

1. A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with two of the following three options:

•a website homepage for the band;

•a cover for its release as part of a digipak (CD/DVD package);

•a magazine advertisement for the digipak (CD/DVD package).

The two options highlighted are the two ancillary texts I have chosen.
